4. Ditch The Diet Mentality
Are you always "on a diet", or trying to lose those last 5 or 10 kilos?
Diet mentality is like poison and could be holding you back from achieving real, long term results.
If you have been yo-yo dieting for years, or constantly taking 2 steps forward, 3 steps back... then it is time to change things up.
It's time to create a healthy lifestyle!
For permanent results, you have to make permanent changes.
Sure there will be times where you may need to be a bit stricter, or work a bit harder...
Or, times where you can't work as hard due to other commitments (like family or work)
But that's okay
This is what I like to do...
Overall I have a healthy balanced lifestyle
This is a lifestyle that allows me to have a body I am happy with, and indulge in a few treats from time to time.
If I start to gain a little bit, I just tighten up my diet and exercise again. I don't let it get out of control or to a point that I start to feel hopeless.
My lifestyle (diet and exercise) supports my goals, and when my goals change I adapt my lifestyle.
I used to be stuck in that diet mentality previously... I would do crazy things to lose a few kilos.
But within 10 to 14 days, it will all be back on and I would be miserable again.
It wasn't until I changed my mindset around diet and exercise that I was able to create permanent and long lasting change.
However, this isn't 'marketable' and so all these shady companies out there will sell their shakes and pills promising that you will create change, when in fact you won't.
The truth is, until you ditch looking for these short term diet solutions and start thinking about what you can maintain long term, you won't get the results you are after. Or, if you do, your success will only be short term.
5. Eat Your Veggies!
Super simple, yet so many of us overlook this.
Most adults are fibre deficient... we don't get enough fresh fruit and vegetables every day.
This leads to sluggish digestion, micronutrient deficiencies and overeating the wrong foods.
Fruit and veggies are full of fibre. Fibre, helps you feel full.
If you aren't eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables, chances are you will be over-consuming more calorie dense items to help you feel fuller.
This is a simple as swapping what you buy at the supermarket and how you design your plate when you sit down to eat.
Make fruits and veggies the biggest portion on your plate, then a small serve of whole food "carbs" like rice or potato and a small serve of "protein" like lentils, beans or tofu. Then top with a little bit of avocado or some crushed nuts or seeds for fats and you have a nutritionally balanced meal.
6. Ditch The Fancy Drinks, You Only Need Water
You don't need sports drinks, soft drinks, tea or coffee... the only beverage you NEED to have is water.
That's not to say you can't enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea in the morning (but I would say watch what you add to it).
The only thing you really need to drink each day though is water, and you should be having at least 8 glasses per day.
Really can't stand water??
I get it, neither could I in the beginning... I was a soft drink fan. I'd have a sugar free redbull, a large coke and 2 coffees per day, plus maybe one or two glasses of water if I was lucky.
But I hated the stuff.
Now, I drink about 4 or 5 litres per day!
Once you start drinking more water, you will crave it more. You will feel dehydrated when you haven't had enough.
I also had sparkling water or added lemon, lime or berries to my water for flavour to help with the transition.
Think about what your body NEEDS vs what your brain is CRAVING and it will make the decision about what to drink a bit easier.
Your body needs water. You don't need to drink anything else.
So there you have it, my next three tips...
