9 Simple Ways To Detox Your Body (Part 3 of 3)

7. Infrared Sauna

Speaking of sweating it out (no. 6 - in part 2), incorporating a sauna session into your routine has great health promoting benefits as well as detoxification.

Some of the benefits of infrared sauna use include: 

  • better sleep
  • relaxation
  • detoxification
  • weight loss
  • relief from sore muscles
  • relief from joint pain such as arthritis
  • improved circulation

Plus more. 

Now some companies have BIG claims when it comes to how many calories you can burn using a sauna. 

I don't buy into that side of things, but the benefits listed above should be enough to encourage you to try incorporate a sauna into your routine. 

8. Get Herby

There are some herbs that can help aid detoxification.

This does not mean you need to go out and purchase one of those expensive detox supplements.

Just get the real fresh herbs yourself and start adding them to dishes, or use the leaves to steep for your own tea (without the extra expense and other nasty ingredients).

What are the best herbs to have to help you detox?

Dandelion leaf (have it in a salad or steep it to make a tea), burdock root, milk thistle and green tea. Be sure to have your green tea away from meals though as the tannins and caffeine can inhibit iron absorption. These teas have all been linked with positive health promoting benefits, and aid in detoxification. 

So you can skip the expensive 'blends' and just get the actual active teas, or add them to your food. I use dandelion leaves in salads from time to time, they are a bit bitter so just be prepared for that. 

9. Practice Meditation or Deep Breathing

Stress puts a huge burden on our body.

Stress can lead to poor digestion, hives, hair loss, insomnia, bloating, water retention and more.

If your body is all out of whack, it won’t be able to detox effectively.

Think of it like this, if your doing all these wonderful things to improve your health, but are still stressed out, it will be like trying to drive your car at 60 with the hand break still on.

It just won’t work. You need to find a way to de-stress.

I find yoga and meditation work really well for me.

Most people spend their day doing shallow breaths, not really using the full capacity of their lungs. Taking some time out to breath and meditate allows your body to switch from your sympathetic nervous system to your parasympathetic nervous system.

Briefly, your sympathetic nervous system is your fight or flight system and it is where we operate every day, pretty much all day. We weren’t designed to be in fight or flight mode all the time.

We need to sink down into our parasympathetic nervous system (often referred to as rest and digest) to ensure that we are are able to digest food properly, and overcome insomnia. Both of these help with detoxification and clean up processes in our body.

So before you turn your nose up at this suggestion, or think it has nothing to do with detoxification… think again. This could be the biggest piece of the puzzle that you have been missing all along.

So there you have it nine (inexpensive) ways you can detox your body and feel fantastic!

Detoxing need not be complicated, extreme or difficult (although I do recommend giving a juice fast a go at least once in your life… they are amazing). It just about getting back to basics and giving your body exactly what it needs.
